The tools of the avant-garde return in an unexpected context: as techniques used to support the sale of apartments on the real-estate market. Jan Domicz traces the trajectory of ideas from artistic experiment to practical marketing instruction.
The space of Foksal Gallery will be gradually repainted according to a found script. Throughout the entire process, the gallery will remain open to the public.
The personal narratives and precise formal construction of the films by British video artist John Smith provide a counterpoint to the impersonal language of an online interior-design guide. Individual experiences of dwelling and the materiality of architecture are set against the anonymous logic of spatial optimization.
Jan Domicz (b. 1990) is a visual artist working with video, objects, and exhibition formats. He is a graduate of the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Arts in Poznań. In his practice, he draws on the narrative potential of space and its socio-political implications. His works have been presented at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and Frankfurt, Kunstverein SALTS in Basel, and Karlin Studios in Prague. As an academic lecturer, Domicz teaches at SWPS University and the Academy of Photography.
John Smith was born in 1952 in Walthamstow, London. He studied at North-East London Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art before becoming an active member of the London Filmmakers’ Co-op. Early in his practice, he drew on conceptual art and structural film while developing a parallel fascination with the immersive power of narrative and spoken language. His extensive body of work challenges the boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation, and abstraction. Carefully constructed films – often grounded in everyday situations and personal experience – use humor and irony to explore and deconstruct the language and conventions of cinema.
